Factors which explain supply response behavior of South Carolina tomato growers were determined. Two well known supply response models were used for comparison: the Nerlovian structural model and the Just risk model. The Just risk model reflected the significance of the risk effect in both stable and unstable periods. An evaluation of forecasting power between the two models was indeterminate. Growers are apparently willing to invest in more information with increased market instability because growers were influenced by the Florida winter price of tomatoes in planting decisions during the period of instability. |

Planaltina... |

A dynamic (multi-period) linear programming model of a beef/sheep farm was used to evaluate the potential for increasing income and for maintaining a specified level of annual income during a cattle cycle. Results indicate that both objectives may be accomplished by adjusting animal numbers in response to changing price ratios: a higher proportion of cows should be kept during the accumulation phase of the cattle cycle, and a higher proportion of ewes should be kept during the liquidation phase. |

For several years now a very striking agaric is known to occur in the Netherlands that baffles every mycologist who has the luck to see it. As one of us (P.H.) never had this luck, the present study is based on thorough examinations of the material by the other author, while for the rather precarious taxonomic decisions both authors are to be held responsible. At first sight the present species resembles a large Agaricus bitorquis, but on closer examination the differences are obvious and manifold. There is however no doubt about the fact that it belongs to the Agaricaceae. It combines microscopical characters of the (sub)tropical genus Micropsalliota with a type of basidiocarp like that of the heaviest species of Agaricus. We think, however, that it... |

The failure to allow for significant crop quality effects in a partial-equilibrium model can lead to misleading inferences about the price, output and welfare implications of air quality improvements. It has been observed that air pollutants such as ozone, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide affect the yield and quality of many crops. The economic benefit from improving air quality in crop producing regions has been measured using a partial-equilibrium approach which accounts only for supply shifting yield effects. It is shown that a yield-effect only model will underestimate output increases and benefits from an air quality improvement when commodity quality improvements as well as yield increases are forthcoming. |
